To highlight this huge demand and to identify potential areas of plastic business, AIDC in association with FICCI and BCPL organized a Handholding Workshop for promotion of the Plastic Park at Dibrugarh on 13th September 2019. The workshop was organized to generate awareness among prospective entrepreneurs about the facilities available in the Plastic Park at Tinsukia and also explore possible investment opportunities in Plastic sector.
The Global Plastics Market is expected to reach USD 654.38 billion by 2020. Plastics demand, globally, is expected to reach 334.83 million tons by 2020. An estimate by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural gas suggests that the annual per capita consumption in India would be 20 kgs by 2022. The average per capita consumption of plastic in India is about 11 kgs, adding to a total of India’s annual consumption of about 14 million tonnes, whereas an average American consumes 109 kgs per year. In North East India the average consumption is less than 3 kg per person.
Manish Khandelwal from GAIL explained the potential of polymer industry in the northeast as well as available raw materials for setting up various types of plastic units. Other prominent speakers included representatives from AIDC, CIPET, prominent manufacturers of machineries as well as the local and regional chambers.
Industry and Commerce Minister of Assam, Chandra Mohan Patowary addressed the workshop as the Chief Guest and expressed his satisfaction on the initiatives taken by the Assam Industrial Development Corporation and BCPL for promotion of the plastic sector in Assam. He stated that the Plastic Park will help in solving the unemployment problem of the state creating job avenues and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Several other senior officials from the industry department, Govt of Assam, Brahmaputra Crackers and Polymers Ltd, and senior representatives from industry participated in the program.
